Do Ho Suh’s Exploration of Space and the Longing of Home

In his fabric installation, The Perfect Home II, Do Ho Suh recreates the memory of a home that he has since left behind. By building this 1:1 scale model of his old apartment in New York City, which he has lived in for 19 years, Do Ho Suh uses the exploration both physical and intangible space to illustrate the impermanence of home and memory. I was reminded of this artist and his work when we talked about the intentional use of space in the Desktop Portrait project and when I saw Rachel Whiteread’s work in one of the desktop portraits. Both artists’ work use space and translucent material to allow their structures to embody a sort of intangible and ethereal feeling.
