Matthew Marks’s new exhibition includes four new sculptures. Each grapples with, physically or otherwise, the human body and its various organs. Their ceramic and stainless steel elements resemble body-like colors, resulting in strange, even unsettling looks. I selected this option because it reminds me of the opposing comfort and discomfort we have with humans. Art that is close to human, but not quite, is often creepy. Art that exposes more than the few parts of the body we see each day is often taboo. In this case, small tubes of steel with body parts might span across fields of familiarity, discomfort, and selfhood.
