This article was striking as it describes art installations and projects that are so similar to the data portrait. Something interesting was how they described that raw numerical data can seem so abstract and unapproachable, thus artists must transform it into something that will evoke an emotional response in an observer. You can find the…

Ramble Maps Turns Geographic Data Into Wall Art
This artist takes the data collected from parks and mountains he skis on and turns it into three dimensional wall art. Although his artworks may be a little less abstract than what we are doing for the data portrait, the three dimensional sculptures of the mountains are derived from online data sets. You can find…
An uplifting campaign in US cities featuring 150 positive slogans urges Americans to ‘keep going’
Watching the news over the past several weeks its become apparent how hectic the world around is – especially with the recent election and ongoing pandemic. How bad ballot design can sway the result of an election
This past week we talked about the importance of type in written communication, especially with ease-of-reading. In light of the upcoming election and talks of voter suppression, this article highlights how poor ballot design can make it difficult for voters to chose their preferred candidate. In the Bush vs Gore election, the arrangement of text…

Inside Information: Cross-Sections of Retro Technology Reveal Historical Moments of Iconic Objects
Looking at these cross section cutaways reminded me of our speculative design project and readings. In the Nature of Representation reading we learned about how symbols have associated meaning and these schematic xray diagrams give the initial impression of explaining how something works. However, upon closer inspection they instead reveal the milestones and key figures…
KOMMIGRAPHICS
COMMUNICATION AGENCY The artwork by this communication agency was particularly eye catching to me because it resembles some of the same 8-bit digital designs that we watched in Susan Kare’s iconography talk. Although some of the designs shown are more complex than those we have already seen, they still seem to convey simplistic messages and…
Bees Encase Raw-Material Embroideries with Honeycomb in New Encaustic Works by Ava Roth
I thought these honeycomb designs were quite interesting as they were reminiscent of our Gestalt project with the unique twist of being three dimensional sculptures. I think the organic medium in which these works are created with contrasts so strongly with the starkness of Adobe Illustrator. Save the bees! Here is the link.
Using Stock Market Charts, Artist Gladys Orteza Transforms Data into Bright Nighttime Landscapes
Looking through this art really reminded me of both the desktop portrait and the data portrait that we will be making later this semester. I found these images intriguing because of how they transform visual data into a graphic that is different than its original practical design. You can find the link here
